En onthoud: age is just a number…..
My time in St Lucia has been amazing
“I’m writing this blog to give you a little insight into my experience as an (somewhat) older volunteer amongst younger volunteers. Before travelling to South Africa, I didn’t fully know what to expect. I wanted to do something completely different that would make me feel useful and would mean I would do something meaningful for another. The moment I arrived at the volunteer house, I realised that I was the oldest volunteer. The other volunteers were probably around the ages of my children. All girls that were either at the start or the finish of travelling all over the world, on their own. Some were more experienced travellers, some were at the start of their journey. Despite the age difference, we got on right from the start! To me it was a bit of an adjustment that I didn’t have to be the ‘mother’. These girls didn’t need me to mother them, in contrary, I learned a lot from them! We did all sorts of fun things together, like going to the beach, watching the sunset, having dinner in town or going on a safari.
Even though I’ve only been on project for 2 weeks, I feel like I’ve known all these girls much longer. I’m confident they’ll keep me updated on their future travels. My time in St. Lucia has been amazing! I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Nothing but respect for the hard work the African Impact staff does, together with the volunteers. I’m grateful that I got to be part of that for a little while.”
